Bach originally composed this work in Weimar, and resurrected it for performance in Leipzig in 1723. The music is scored for soprano soloist with oboe, 2 violins, viola, cello and continuo. This volume includes singing texts in the original German, and in English translations by Henry S. Drinker (revised by Robert Scandrett).
