Edited by Viktor Ekimovsky. With an explanatory article by Svetlana Lashchenko in Russian and English, critical notes, and an appendix of extra music. Shostakovich composed this opera on a libretto he wrote with Alexander Preys, based on the story Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District by Nikolai Leskov. It was originally composed in 1932. He made major changes to it beginning in the 1950s, and it was remounted in 1963. The score includes singing texts in Russian and in transliterations.
