The brainchild of librettist and impresario Emanuel Schikaneder, Der dumme Gärtner aus dem Gebürge oder Die zween Anton premiered in Vienna, 1789 to great success, It was highly influential to Mozart and others, and inspired six sequels. Composition was a collaborative effort, led by singers Benedikt Schack and Franz Xaver Gerl. This volume presents the complete opera; a future volume wil present one of the sequels. With an introduction, text and translation, plates, critical report, and appendix.
