The song cycle was written between 1900-1901. Serres, a French composer and teacher, studied with C. Franck at the Paris Conservatory. He joined the faculty of the Schola Cantorum in 1900 and became its director in 1935 when it reorganized as L'Ecole Cesar Franck.
